英特爾公布SDC專利:多核協同工作,強化單線程處理能力

近日,網絡上曝光了英特爾一項編號為EP4579444A1的專利,名為“軟件定義超級核心”(SDC)。這項創新技術旨在繞過硬件規模擴展和制程工藝升級的常規路徑,通過軟件層面的優化,實現多核心間的協同工作,從而大幅提升單線程處理能力。

據專利描述,SDC技術的核心理念是讓兩個或多個CPU核心能夠像單個超級核心一樣協同運作。這一理念聽起來與早年奔騰4時代的“逆超線程”技術傳聞頗為相似,也引發了業界對英特爾取消的“皇家核心”項目與SDC之間是否存在某種關聯的猜測。

在傳統CPU設計中,單個物理核心的性能提升面臨邊際效益遞減的困境,因此業界普遍依賴于制程工藝的進步和頻率的提升來增強單核性能。然而,英特爾近年來推出的P+E核混合架構,雖然在一定程度上緩解了這一困境,但E核的性能表現并未完全滿足用戶的期待。

許多用戶渴望英特爾能夠推出一款全P核的處理器,但遺憾的是,短期內這一愿望似乎難以實現。根據英特爾的路線圖,未來的Titan Lake處理器甚至將完全放棄P核,轉而采用最多100個E核的設計。在這樣的背景下,SDC技術的出現無疑為英特爾提供了一種新的思路。

SDC技術通過軟件層面的優化,將程序拆分成多個代碼塊,并將這些代碼塊分配給多個并行的小核進行協同處理。從操作系統的角度來看,這些協同工作的小核組被視為一個統一的邏輯核心,無需進行軟件層的適配。而對于用戶而言,這一技術仿佛能夠讓多個較小的核心動態聚合成一個更大的“超級核心”,從而高效地完成單線程任務。

盡管多核心協同工作面臨著指令順序維護和數據同步等技術挑戰,但英特爾在專利中提出了通過特殊指令和“影子存儲緩沖區”等機制來確保核心間數據傳遞的準確性。值得注意的是,SDC技術并非多線程并行處理,而是專門針對單線程操作的優化。這一技術的優勢在于無需提高電壓或頻率即可提升指令每周期(IPC)性能,特別適用于突發性高負載的單線程任務。

SDC技術還能夠根據負載需求動態地在“常規核心”與“超級核心”之間切換,從而靈活應對各種應用場景。然而,目前這項技術仍處于專利階段,要將其應用于實際處理器架構中,還需要克服核心間低延遲通信、操作系統調度適配等工程化難題。
